Episode 2
RaulOnRails on indie products, creative marketing, and the long game
Joel and Greg welcome their first guest, Raul Papadineti (RaulOnRails), a Romania-based Ruby on Rails developer turned solopreneur.
Raul explains a creative marketing campaign for his vehicle-accountant app: a fully functional, car-mounted, oversized ring binder built from hardware-store parts. It sparked community sharing and bumper stickers with QR codes, and brought steady daily signups approaching 300 users after a few months.
He also talks about how buying premium .ro insurance domains during COVID eventually led to partnering with a Romanian broker via API to sell car and travel insurance online. Raul shares his other Rails projects (Calm Companies, OG Pilot, and Git Digest), why building from personal pain points matters, and reflects on solo building, community, remote work tradeoffs, conferences, Omarchy, and recent Rails and performance developments like Roundhouse and Spinel.
